This lesson is designed to either coincide with Organ Donation Week in September or fit in with your general LifeSkills/PSHE programme. It includes a presentation and teaching notes, which include a link to duplicate a survey on Forms to get students thinking about the topic and some of the issues which will arise. There are opportunities for discussion and to broaden awareness and blood and bone marrow donation are also mentioned. This lesson could be used on September 5 for International Day of Charity, but could also be used as part of you careers or PSHE or Life Skills programme to promote the value of volunteering from the point of view, not just of altruism, but also of building skills towards employment and future applications. This lesson is designed to raise awareness around the issues of hate crime on a basis of sexual orientation and gives opportunities to discuss why crimes may go unreported and what is being done to increase understanding around hate crime and reporting. This presentation and accompanying discussion sheet and teaching notes are designed to give students the opportunity to discuss issues surrounding race and hate crime on a basis of race. They should gain a fuller understanding of who is affected, starting with the quiz on Forms (link to duplicate in the Teaching Notes) and through the links to extracts from news articles. The resource also includes links to videos which you can choose to include (timings included so you can estimate what will fit your time slot). There is a focus on racism in sport and a wider discussion of how trends in sport influence society and vice versa.

This resource allows for discussion around the damage being perpetrated by hate crime on a basis of religion and allows for discussion of terms around the subject, awareness of the history of such persecution, the religious make-up of England and Wales and the opportunity to understand what can be done to make a change and the role of the law. Osteoporosis Week comes at the beginning of June, but this could be part of PHSE at any juncture. The lesson discusses what the condition is and how it can affect the body, but also looks at preventative members and poses the question of why young people should be thinking of this/be aware now. In many ways it contributes to supporting a healthy diet and exercise regime, also highlighting the contributing factors of alcohol and smoking, eating disorders and steroid tablets. There is a quiz on Forms to introduce students to thinking about the topic and the link to duplicate is in the Teaching Notes. We want our students to go out into the world and make healthy and informed choices.

There is a whole world out there to see, but travel is expensive, so this lesson looks at ways of seeing the world without breaking the bank, using skills and training young people might pick up on the way and alerts them to looking out for opportunities while students. This would go well as a follow-up to a presentation on Gap Years or a talk from a colleague about their travel experiences. This presentation discusses the issues around Hate Crime and Disability, looking at what constitutes a disability and providing discussion points to consider various aspects of the question, including the question of advocacy and how to report or support someone experiencing such crimes. This lesson discusses the importance of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development and includes opportunities for discussion and optional videos (timings included, so you can calculate what works for your time slot). It allows for discussion of current issues around misogyny and where they may stem from, while giving opportunities to consider the differences faced by men and women going out in terms of their own safety. This topic has been under discussion lately and this lesson allows for a fuller understanding of the term and the implications it can have for men and society, while reflecting on how to reset and make positive choices. This assembly highlights this year’s theme of Anxiety, how it can affect anyone and everyone, but also looking at supporting and understanding those whose circumstances mean they are more vulnerable to feelings of anxiety. It looks at how you can cope with anxiety and where to seek help if you have ongoing problems with anxiety. It will also be part of a bundle with other resources looking at situations where stress and anxiety are more prevalent, such as when facing disappointment, or in the face of exams, and areas of our lives we can work on to help improve our mental health, such as sleep, friendship and acts of kindness.

This lesson is designed with International Day of Families in mind, but raises questions and includes discussion points which would fit any discussion of families, so is easily adapted to fit with PHSE/RSE/Lifeskills topics.
